The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, on Monday met with the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, to address rising security concerns in the state.
The meeting focused largely on the recent abduction of pupils in Oriire Local Government and other security incidents reported across Oke-Ogun zone. The Speaker said the Assembly could not fold its arms while communities live in fear.
Commending CP Olugbenga’s efforts so far, Ogundoyin expressed confidence in the ongoing rescue operations for the abducted Oriire pupils. He noted that the command’s swift response had given residents hope that the children would be returned safely.
However, the Speaker stressed that reactive measures alone are not enough. He called for stronger border security, improved intelligence gathering, and increased patrols in vulnerable communities. “We must move from response to prevention,” Ogundoyin stated during the engagement.
He pointed out that Oke-Ogun, with its vast borders, has become a flashpoint for criminal activities. According to him, reinforcing security architecture in those areas will reduce incidents and restore confidence among residents, farmers, and traders.
Ogundoyin reaffirmed the 10th Assembly’s commitment to supporting security agencies through legislation, oversight, and budgetary backing. He said protecting lives and property remains a top legislative priority under his leadership.
The Speaker also emphasized the need for collaboration between the legislature, security agencies, and the Executive arm. He argued that a unified approach would strengthen peace and stability across all five zones of Oyo State.
CP Olugbenga, in his response, assured the Speaker that the command was deploying more resources to track the kidnappers and secure Oke-Ogun communities. Both leaders agreed to sustain regular consultation to ensure early warning systems and rapid intervention become standard practice.
