Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has urged residents to reject politicians without clear, realistic and people-oriented programmes as the 2027 general elections approach.

The governor made the call on Sunday while speaking with journalists after a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service for his late mother, Chief (Mrs.) Abigail Omojolagbe Makinde, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan. The remembrance marked six years since her death on October 15, 2020.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, on October 18, 2026, Makinde advised residents to carefully scrutinise the promises and manifestos of political aspirants and their parties before making electoral choices.

Reflecting on his late mother, the governor described the annual remembrance as an opportunity to recall her values, teachings and the strong bond they shared, including moments of disagreement that always ended in reconciliation.

In his sermon, the Cathedral’s Provost, Very Rev’d Samuel Olawoyin, commended Makinde for consistently honouring his parents’ memory despite his demanding schedule. He urged the congregation to follow his example in honouring their parents.

Olawoyin also praised the governor’s developmental projects across the state’s geopolitical zones and his commitment to the welfare of workers and pensioners. He encouraged Makinde to remain focused and trust in God amid praise and criticism.
