The Oyo State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day in commemoration of Isese Day, a day set aside to celebrate the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the Yoruba people.
This was contained in a press release signed today by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor of Oyo State.
According to the release, the declaration was made via a memo by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde. Governor ‘Seyi Makinde approved the holiday to enable workers and residents to fully participate in activities marking the state’s cultural heritage.
Governor Makinde extended his felicitations to adherents of African Traditional Religion across Oyo State, Nigeria, and beyond, wishing them a successful and spiritually enriching celebration.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness across all religions and expressed gratitude to traditional worshippers for their support of his government over the past seven years.
The memo noted that the work-free day will also provide an opportunity for prayers for the peace, unity, and stability of Oyo State in particular, and Nigeria in general.
The release recalled that Governor Makinde introduced the Isese Day celebration as part of his administration’s vision to honour adherents of traditional religion and to harness cultural tourism as a driver of economic growth.
It emphasized that cultural tourism remains one of Oyo State’s greatest strengths, with festivals and heritage sites continuing to attract visitors and boost the local economy.
The government urged residents to observe the day peacefully and use it to reflect on the values of culture, tradition, and unity.
