The National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS) has condemned the reported freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the development as a dangerous precedent capable of undermining democratic governance and the welfare of residents.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Olalere Benedict Adetunji, the association said while it remained committed to the fight against corruption, anti-graft agencies must operate within the confines of the Constitution and avoid actions that could be perceived as political persecution or selective justice.
NAOS maintained that the EFCC was established to promote justice, accountability, and transparency, stressing that its operations should not weaken democratic institutions or create political instability.
The association warned that if the reported action was not backed by due legal process, it could disrupt government activities, including salary payments, healthcare services, education, and infrastructure projects, thereby placing undue hardship on innocent citizens.
It called on the EFCC to review the reported action, publicly clarify its legal basis, and ensure that all investigations involving public institutions are conducted professionally, fairly, and without disrupting governance.
NAOS also urged the Federal Government to guarantee the operational independence of anti-corruption agencies while ensuring that their powers are exercised responsibly and in accordance with the rule of law.
The student body further appealed to the National Assembly, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and other stakeholders to remain vigilant in defending constitutional governance, institutional independence, and democratic principles.
The association warned that if the EFCC failed to review the reported action within a reasonable period, it would mobilise its members nationwide to stage a protest at the Commission’s headquarters. It reiterated its commitment to defending constitutional governance, justice, and equity, while maintaining that its position was guided by the interests of the Nigerian people.
