Residents of Seven Ido Communities Protest Deplorable Road, Demand Urgent Government Intervention
Residents of seven communities in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State on Monday staged a peaceful protest over the deplorable condition of the road linking their communities to Oloyo, Alaho and Abeokuta, calling on both the state and federal governments to urgently intervene.
The protesters, comprising youths, women, farmers and commercial drivers, marched from Awonsoso to Power Line, an area popularly known as “PASOBA,” carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they expressed their frustration over the condition of the road.
The protesters covered more than 10 kilometres during the demonstration, stressing that the road serves as a major link connecting Awonsoso, Balogun, Baba Agba, Olupoyi, Siba, Agaloke and Power Line communities.
Speaking during the protest, a community leader, Alhaji Abdulwahab Sulaimon, lamented that residents had endured the poor condition of the road for several years, describing the situation as a serious challenge to the socio-economic activities of the affected communities.
Sulaimon said the deteriorating road had made movement difficult for residents, farmers and other road users, while appealing to the relevant authorities to come to the aid of the communities by rehabilitating the road.
Also speaking, Mrs. Olanrewaju, a community leader from Awonsoso, appealed to the Oyo State Government and the leadership of Ido Local Government to urgently find a lasting solution to the problem, noting that residents could no longer continue to cope with the condition of the road.
In his remarks, Mr. Kayode Orekoya, who represented the seven communities, said the deplorable state of the road had made it increasingly difficult for residents to travel from one community to another. He stressed that urgent government intervention was needed to ease transportation and improve the quality of life of residents.
The protesters further alleged that the bad road had contributed to frequent accidents, loss and damage of farm produce, increased transportation costs and difficulties in accessing healthcare facilities and schools. They therefore called for immediate action to rehabilitate the road, saying improved road infrastructure would boost economic activities, enhance mobility and improve the overall wellbeing of residents across the affected communities.
