The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has concluded its 2026 National Convention in Abuja with the election of a new National Executive Council and a renewed call for stronger investment in technical education, student welfare, and campus security.
The convention, held at Kapital Klub Hall, Asokoro, Abuja, brought together accredited delegates from 191 Federal and State Polytechnics, Monotechnics, and Colleges of Technology across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones under the theme, “Strengthening Polytechnic Education for National Development through Unity, Innovation and Strategic Leadership.”
In a communiqué issued at the end of the convention, delegates commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising education through the Renewed Hope Agenda, citing sustained TETFund interventions, the implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), increased investment in technical education, institutional infrastructure development, and quality assurance initiatives.
The association also applauded the Federal Government and security agencies for the successful rescue of the Rector, staff, and students of the Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, while calling for improved security around tertiary institutions nationwide to ensure a safe learning environment.
NAPS expressed concern over the shortage of hostel accommodation across tertiary institutions and urged the Federal and State Governments, TETFund, and institutional managements to declare an emergency on student housing through the construction, rehabilitation, and expansion of on-campus accommodation facilities.
On student welfare, the association praised the establishment of NELFUND as a major educational financing initiative but called for prompt disbursement of institutional fees and upkeep allowances. It also urged the government to abolish the refund system associated with the loan scheme, describing it as burdensome to beneficiaries.
The convention adopted several resolutions, including sustained engagement with the Federal Government on policies affecting polytechnic education, advocacy for improved funding of technical and vocational education, enhanced campus security, increased hostel facilities, industrial harmony, and improved students’ welfare.
Delegates also conducted elections, producing a new National Executive Council led by Comrade Jimoh Ibrahim of Federal Polytechnic Bida as National President. Other elected officers include Comrade Festus Agofure as Senate President, Comrade Lawal Lukman as Secretary General, Comrade Noah Agada as Vice President (National Affairs), and Comrade Ogunsuyi Muyiwa Thomas of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, as National Public Relations Officer, alongside other national officers.
At the close of the convention, NAPS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting quality technical education, institutional excellence, national unity, and responsible student leadership. The association pledged continued collaboration with governments and stakeholders to advance policies that strengthen polytechnic education and improve the welfare of Nigerian students, while congratulating the newly elected leadership and charging them to provide transparent, accountable, and inclusive leadership.
