The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties over alleged failure to comply with constitutional requirements for continued registration.
Justice Peter Lifu issued the order on Monday while ruling on a suit filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which sought to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the affected parties from its register.
The parties affected by the ruling are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
According to the suit, the parties allegedly breached the provisions of Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution, prompting the request for their deregistration.
In his ruling, Justice Lifu directed INEC to deregister the five political parties for failing to meet the constitutional conditions required for their continued existence as registered political parties in Nigeria.
