The Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence for his outstanding contributions to education and local administration.
The award was presented during the public presentation and book launch of The Nigerian Crisis: From Diagnosis to Solution, authored by Marvel Oghene, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Jericho, Ibadan. The event attracted dignitaries from across Oyo State and beyond.
Akande, who served as the Guest of Honour, was recognised for his people-centred approach to governance, particularly his interventions in education. His administration has introduced extra lesson programmes, learning materials and other initiatives aimed at supporting students and reducing the financial burden on parents.
Receiving the award, Akande dedicated the honour to the people of Ibadan South West and reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development. He stressed that education remains a major foundation for building a better society and promised continued investment in the development of children and young people.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Medical Officer of God’s Knot Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Olowookere, described the book as timely and thought-provoking, stressing the need for leaders who can move beyond identifying Nigeria’s challenges to implementing practical solutions.
The Royal Father of the Day, the Baale of Mokola, Chief Abonde, offered prayers for the author, honourees and continued peace and progress in Ibadan. Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Olamide Keshinro emphasised that sustainable development must begin at the grassroots, with accountable and accessible leadership.
The author, Marvel Oghene, explained that the book was inspired by the need to provide practical solutions to Nigeria’s socio-economic, political and security challenges. He commended local government leaders such as Akande for demonstrating that meaningful progress is possible through people-focused leadership.
Community leaders and educators at the event also applauded Akande’s contributions to education and youth development in Ibadan South West. The programme featured goodwill messages, panel discussions and the presentation of awards to other distinguished individuals, ending with a call for collective action by government, civil society and citizens to address Nigeria’s challenges from the grassroots.
