Nigerian rapper Oludemilade Martin Alejo, popularly known as YCEE, has revealed that he has been battling bipolar disorder for the past six years.
The 33-year-old musician made the disclosure during an appearance on Arise TV, where he spoke openly about his mental health journey and the challenges he has faced since receiving the diagnosis.
According to YCEE, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in London in 2020, a development he said significantly changed his perspective on life and helped him better understand his experiences.
He explained that after returning to Nigeria, he struggled to access adequate treatment and consistent mental health support, highlighting the difficulties many Nigerians face in obtaining specialised psychiatric care.
The rapper said his experience exposed serious gaps in Nigeria’s mental health infrastructure, including limited access to qualified professionals, treatment facilities and support systems for people living with mental health conditions.
YCEE argued that the problem goes beyond mental health alone, describing it as part of a broader crisis affecting Nigeria’s healthcare system and the availability of quality medical services for citizens.
He noted that millions of Nigerians lack access to even basic healthcare, making it particularly difficult for individuals with chronic conditions such as bipolar disorder to receive sustained treatment and support.
The artiste’s revelation has sparked renewed conversations about mental health awareness, access to psychiatric care and the urgent need for stronger healthcare policies and infrastructure in Nigeria.
