Ibadan South West Local Government Chairman, Hon. Kehinde Akande, has called on NYSC members to act as ambassadors of unity by promoting socio-cultural understanding and national cohesion. He made the call at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Iseyin while attending the Cultural Diversity Day as Special Guest of Honour, an event that gathered corps members from different platoons to display Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Akande described cultural diversity as Nigeria’s greatest strength and said the NYSC scheme remains a vital platform for building a united and tolerant society. He stressed that the service year is not just about community development, but also about learning to respect and celebrate differences.
According to him, when corps members exhibit cultures like Ijebuland, Oyo, Igbo, Kanuri, Tiv and others, they are promoting the social cohesion the country needs to thrive. He commended their enthusiasm and creativity in presenting traditions, attire, music and cuisines, noting that such activities break down stereotypes and build mutual respect.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Wasiu Olatunbosun, was also present. His attendance highlighted the state government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage and engaging youths in nation-building.
NYSC Oyo State Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Ayo Peters, appreciated Akande for honoring the invitation and for his continuous support for corps members serving in Ibadan South West. He said the chairman’s contributions to the programme were valued by the NYSC family.
Representatives of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, served as Father of the Day. In a goodwill message delivered by a palace representative, the monarch praised NYSC for sustaining unity through inter-tribal interaction among corps members.
The major highlight of the day was a colourful cultural parade by all platoons. Each group showcased the unique heritage of different Nigerian tribes through dance, drama, traditional attire and exhibitions.
Stakeholders at the event described it as a timely reminder of the role young Nigerians play in sustaining peace, tolerance and national integration across the country.
