Maintaining a standard professional standing as a broadcaster with the new influx of online news outlet can be quite challenging and frustrating, as exploring or filtering many information out there are reduced to algorithms and engagements.
As a broadcaster, who is also a governors’ office correspondent, explaining government policy and its effect to a layman is quite a challenge, that just only a regular news bulletin can’t resolve. A societal and analytical programme will do so little, as the attention span of the younger generation is quite low.
Creating a short and simple engaging digital content titled “Through my lens” is an idea I hope to nurture and build. Creating or explaining a simple life scenario concerning new government policies and how it affects ordinary citizens, will guarantee a clear and better understanding of governance and also help in accountability.
A Society that understands government policies will be more involved in governance and policy making, and holds power that be accountable when necessary, which will also create a scale of check and balance for policy initiations.
Through My Lens is an ideology have been nurturing, because of my expertise as a professional translator of English language to Yoruba. Some words in English might be too weighty to breakdown in the language, while some will simply not weigh enough to explain scenarios of the situation. Living in the southwestern part of Nigeria, where Yoruba is the primary language, it can be quite unfortunate how most people that are directly affected by governmental policy has little to no understanding or knowledge of it.
It is true this generation is fast-changing but media has always journey along with evolution and trend, some will even dare say, that media is what brings about the trend or evolution. Keeping up with the digital age is nothing strange to the industry, as media is a major tool in bringing out the change.
Creating a short content in the primary language explaining in details what the policy is about, how it will be implemented, the benefits of it, loopholes to avoid and what to look forward to, will greatly help and make things easy for the people.
Also, the younger generation doesn’t seems to be interested in politics or governance, when you ask them, some might say they’re not just interested in politics has it doesn’t affect their day to day life, but it does. Some find governance or government a bit complicated for their own understanding, hence they stay away from it.
People learning more about governance, Policy making, and government is very key in navigating the new generation businesses, lifestyles and even livelihood, has policy, governance, regime, controls everything, including our day to day life.
Flowing with this, while keeping everyone informed should be responsibility of professionals in the field, while helping the slow-witted adjust gracefully. “Through My Lens” is one of many innovations I hope to nurture has i learn more about being a broadcaster.
