Oyo Govt, Stakeholders Pledge Stronger Push for Agricultural Sustainability, Food Security
The Oyo State government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening agricultural sustainability and boosting food security across the state, as key stakeholders and development partners pledged renewed collaboration to transform the sector.
Speaking on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration remains focused on building a resilient agricultural system that guarantees food availability and supports farmers’ livelihoods
Olaleye, who was represented by the Director of Research, Planning and Statistics at the Ministry, Mrs. Adeniran Funke, made the pledge during an engagement with stakeholders and development partners in the state. She stressed that sustainable agriculture remains a top priority for the Makinde-led government, noting that partnerships with relevant actors are critical to achieving long-term results.
Highlighting irrigation as a key area of focus, Mrs. Adeniran said the administration is paying close attention to water resource management. According to her, rivers flowing through Ibadan already provide natural support for young farmers cultivating vegetables within the city and its environs. She noted that leveraging such natural resources through improved irrigation infrastructure will reduce dependence on seasonal rainfall and boost year-round production.
The commissioner added that government’s collaboration with stakeholders and development partners will target capacity building, access to modern inputs, and improved extension services. This, she said, is aimed at empowering farmers, especially youths and women, to adopt climate-smart practices that protect the environment while improving yields.
Stakeholders at the meeting commended the state government for its consistent investment in agriculture since 2019. They pledged to deepen collaboration with the ministry to scale up interventions that will strengthen food systems, reduce post-harvest losses, and position Oyo State as a model for agricultural sustainability in Nigeria.
With food security becoming a national concern amid climate change and rising production costs, the renewed pledge by Oyo State government and its partners signals a strategic push to safeguard food supply and create more opportunities for agribusinesses across the state.
