Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians to remain united and appreciate the sacrifices of the country’s founding heroes as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026, the governor made the call during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, Makinde spoke on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing.”
The governor said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of the nation’s founding fathers, urging citizens to remember their contributions and recognise that the freedom Nigerians enjoy today was made possible by their dedication to nation-building.
Makinde noted that the anniversary provided an opportunity for sober reflection on the challenges confronting Nigeria and Oyo State. He said independence had also given Nigerians the opportunity to govern themselves under democratic principles and the rule of law, stressing that these values must continue to guide the country.

The governor emphasised that unity remained essential to Nigeria’s progress, noting that the country’s more than 250 ethnic groups should see their diversity as a strength rather than a source of division. He urged Nigerians to cultivate the spirit of togetherness and work collectively for the development of the country.
Recounting the achievements of his administration since 2019, Makinde said Oyo State had recorded progress in education, security, sports, business and infrastructure. He highlighted the establishment of the Amotekun Corps and its collaboration with other security agencies, as well as infrastructure projects spread across the five zones of the state.
According to him, the administration’s interventions include improvements in education facilities, road networks, healthcare infrastructure and the Light Up Oyo State initiative. He appreciated residents for their cooperation and support, which he said had contributed to the government’s ability to implement its development programmes.
The celebration featured a march past, cultural displays and presentation of prizes, with government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries in attendance. Makinde congratulated Nigerians and residents of Oyo State on the anniversary and called for continued peaceful coexistence for the development of the country.
