The Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Oluwaseun Oluwatobi Olufade, has flagged off the second phase of his administration’s one-year free health insurance programme for 150 selected residents of the council.
The initiative was announced during a ceremony attended by political leaders, healthcare stakeholders, council officials, community leaders and beneficiaries, with the programme aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare for residents of Ibadan North.
Speaking at the event, Olufade said the initiative was designed to prioritise the health and welfare of residents, following the success recorded during the first phase. He noted that the first phase provided beneficiaries with various medical interventions, including a ₦24 million hip replacement, two caesarean sections, three appendectomies, 13 eye-care treatments, eight dental treatments and 22 laboratory investigations.
Olufade said the impact of the first phase motivated him to commence the second phase, with plans for a third phase in the future. He thanked party and community leaders, political functionaries, management teams and residents of Ibadan North for their continued support for his administration.

Also speaking, Member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle DON, urged residents to take their health seriously by seeking medical attention whenever they notice changes in their bodies. He advised people not to attribute every health challenge to spiritual causes and pledged to support the enrolment of more residents in the health insurance scheme.
The Chairman, College of Health and Science, Eleyele, Hon. Babatunde Olaniyan, encouraged residents to embrace preventive healthcare through regular medical check-ups. He urged beneficiaries to make proper use of their OYSHIA cards, describing them as a means of accessing healthcare and reducing financial pressure.
In her welcome address, the Medical Officer of Health, Ibadan North Local Government, Dr. Aminat Aboderin, commended Olufade for his commitment to the wellbeing of residents. She encouraged members of the public to utilise the council’s primary healthcare facilities, noting that they have trained personnel, necessary equipment and provisions for free treatment.
The Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), Dr. Sola Akande, also commended Olufade for his commitment to inclusive healthcare. He noted that the chairman had enrolled the highest number of residents with OYSHIA among local government chairmen, stressing that health insurance provides financial protection and access to treatment.
Dr. Akande urged other political leaders and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the initiative by enrolling vulnerable people, workers, students and others in health insurance schemes. The APM Chairman in Ibadan North, Alhaji Mustapha Ademuyiwa, also praised Olufade’s performance and appreciated residents and leaders for their support.
Representatives of the beneficiaries, Olooye Olafenwa Ramoni Olacity and Mogaji Abdullahi, expressed gratitude to the council chairman and promised to use the opportunity judiciously. The event also featured an orientation for the new beneficiaries, a surprise birthday celebration for Madam Felicia Ajuwon, and the presence of political leaders, council officials, healthcare stakeholders and community leaders.
