The Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande, has led a joint security operation that uncovered a suspected criminal hideout in the Odo-Ona area of the council, marking what residents described as a major breakthrough in community security.
The location was reportedly known as a centre for illegal activities and had become difficult for security personnel to access, while residents linked the area to vandalism and other criminal acts that had disrupted peace in the community.
Community leaders disclosed that they had written several petitions and appeals to the local government seeking intervention, adding that notices of evacuation and removal had been served on occupants of the hideout for more than six months without compliance.
The raid was carried out in collaboration with security agencies and involved top council officials, including the Head of Local Government Administration, Alhaji Babatunde Olagunju, the Director of Works, Alhaji Olona, the Director of Estate, and other local government workers.
During the operation, security operatives reportedly recovered items suspected to have been used for unlawful purposes, while residents alleged that those operating from the hideout were involved in the vandalisation of electrical cables, street lights and property belonging to the Water Corporation.
Speaking after the raid, Hon. Akande assured residents that the local government would not tolerate any activity capable of threatening peace and security, and he commended security agencies for their swift response and professionalism.
Community leaders welcomed the operation, with the Chairman of Gada/Olugbode Community, Adepoju Popoola, describing it as a historic achievement that would allow residents to sleep with greater peace of mind, while the Baale of Odo-Ona, Oloye Mojeed Gunwa Tajo, said the raid had brought relief to residents who had lived in fear.
Residents expressed appreciation to the council chairman, the local government team and security operatives for the intervention, while the local government reiterated its commitment to regular patrols, community engagement and sustained efforts to prevent crime and maintain peace across all wards of Ibadan South West.
