Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, and Senator Iyabo Obasanjo have engaged in a public disagreement over allegations that she demanded reimbursement for expenses incurred during her governorship campaign in Ogun State.
The controversy followed claims attributed to Obasanjo that she left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because Adeola allegedly failed to fulfil a promise to refund her campaign expenses.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Kayode Odunaro, Adeola denied the allegation and described the purported demand as insulting and inappropriate.
The senator argued that the alleged request suggested that Obasanjo viewed her participation in the governorship race as an investment to be recovered rather than a genuine effort to serve the people of Ogun State.
Adeola made the remarks while addressing members of the Council of Iyalajes and Babaalajes (market leaders) in Remoland during a meeting at his senatorial office in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area.
According to him, those making such demands were motivated by personal interests and access to public funds rather than the development and welfare of Ogun State.
He questioned why he should be held responsible for refunding campaign expenses, asking whether he had compelled Obasanjo to contest the governorship election in the first place.
Iyabo Obasanjo, a former APC governorship aspirant and former Commissioner for Health, has since defected to the PDP, where she has emerged as the party’s Ogun Central senatorial candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
