Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of residents, announcing the restoration of the wage award and transport subsidy to cushion the impact of rising petrol prices and economic hardship.

Makinde made the announcement on Friday while addressing workers, Labour leaders and top government officials who welcomed him back to the state after his annual leave. He said the wage award would be renewed for another three months, while the transport subsidy would also continue.

The governor called for a meeting between the state government and Labour leaders, noting that his administration was aware of the economic challenges confronting residents as a result of certain Federal Government policies. He thanked workers for their dedication and support, assuring them that the government would continue to take steps to reduce the impact of the economic situation.

Makinde disclosed that Oyo State’s monthly wage bill had increased from ₦4.5 billion in 2019 to about ₦18 billion, while the minimum wage had risen from ₦18,000 to ₦80,000 within the same period. He said the figures reflected the growing financial responsibilities of the state government.

The governor also commended Acting Governor Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal for effectively steering the affairs of the state during his absence, saying governance continued seamlessly. He used the occasion to advocate adherence to constitutional provisions on the transfer of presidential powers whenever the President proceeds on leave.

Addressing political issues, Makinde dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress that the €55 million French health loan would be diverted to fund his presidential campaign. He explained that the facility was strictly meant for improving healthcare delivery and upgrading health facilities across Oyo State, adding that the process had been ongoing since 2020.

He urged residents to carefully consider the track records and capacity of political aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that decisions made during the election would determine the future direction of governance in Oyo State. He also warned against making promises without considering their implications for teacher recruitment, salaries and infrastructure.

Earlier, Acting Governor Lawal, the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi, and Head of Service, Dr. Adenike Fashina, commended Governor Makinde for his leadership and commitment to workers’ welfare. Labour leaders also appreciated his support for workers, while the governor thanked all stakeholders for their cooperation during his absence.
