The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the legacies of individuals who contributed to the promotion of African culture and Yoruba heritage.
This was contained in a press release signed by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor of Oyo State, on August 12, 2026. The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, stated this during the third edition of the World Sango Festival and Duro Ladipo Memorial Symposium held at the Cultural Centre, Mokola, Ibadan.
Olatubosun called on governments at all levels to consider transforming the late cultural icon Duro Ladipo’s residence into a monument or museum. He noted that the first two editions of the symposium were held at the residence.
He said converting the residence into a cultural site would serve as a lasting tribute to Duro Ladipo’s contributions to Yoruba culture and heritage.
A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of a new cultural anthem. Olatubosun announced that the anthem would henceforth be played at all cultural and Isese-related programmes in Oyo State immediately after the state anthem.
He described the initiative as a deliberate effort to strengthen, preserve and promote Yoruba traditions and cultural identity across the state.
Speaking on Sango, the President of the International Council of Ifa Religion, Dr. Fayemi Ifakayode, explained that Sango in Yoruba traditional religion refers to Sango Ayilegbe-orun, described as one of the messengers of Olodumare who descended from the celestial realm.
Yoruba culture and arts advocate, Prince Tunde Odunlade, urged Yoruba people to preserve the values and traditions inherited from their ancestors. The event was attended by the widow of Duro Ladipo, Mrs. Biodun Duro-Ladipo, traditional religion devotees from the 33 local government areas of Oyo State, cultural stakeholders and other dignitaries.
