The Oyo State Government, in partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation, has commenced the distribution of 30,000 bags of 10kg rice to vulnerable residents across the state under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme. The distribution, held at the Local Government Training School, Agodi, Ibadan, marks the second phase of the joint food relief initiative.
Speaking at the event, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde, said the initiative is aimed at alleviating poverty and improving the welfare of vulnerable groups, including widows, persons with disabilities, the elderly and other underprivileged residents. The development was disclosed today in a statement signed by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
Professor Babatunde explained that beneficiaries were drawn from all 33 local government areas of the state, adding that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to supporting residents through strategic partnerships with the private sector.
He also commended the Aliko Dangote Foundation for its sustained support, describing the intervention as a noble initiative. He urged other private organisations to complement government efforts in tackling poverty and food insecurity through corporate social responsibility.
The Head of Operations of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Mr. Edero Victor Ejiro, said the 30,000 bags of rice distributed in Oyo State form part of similar interventions being implemented across the country to cushion the effects of economic hardship.
Ejiro praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his administration’s food security initiatives and commitment to supporting vulnerable residents. He also appreciated members of the distribution committee for ensuring transparency during the first phase of the programme and encouraged beneficiaries to share with others in need.
In his vote of thanks, the Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, commended Governor Makinde and the Aliko Dangote Foundation for the gesture, noting that the initiative would provide relief to many struggling households.
Some beneficiaries, including Mrs. Adijat Akinsolotu and Alhaji Muyideen Oyenike, expressed gratitude to the state government and the Aliko Dangote Foundation, saying the food relief would help cushion the impact of rising food prices and ease the economic burden on their families.
