It was a day of celebration for residents of Akuro and Bode communities as the Executive Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Akande, commissioned two newly constructed Primary Health Centres to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots. The facilities are Akuro Primary Health Centre and Bode Primary Health Centre.
Both centres were built from the ground up and equipped with modern medical infrastructure under Hon. Akande’s administration. Each facility is designed to provide maternal and child health services, immunization, antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, treatment of common ailments, laboratory services, and health education programs.
The commissioning attracted dignitaries, political leaders, health officials, and a large turnout of residents. Present were the Vice Chairman Hon. Tajudeen Adigun ATU, Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Health Care Board Dr. Olatunji, councilors, supervisory councillors, special assistants, CDAs, interfaith leaders, directors, management staff, and residents from Akuro, Bode and surrounding areas.
The atmosphere was festive as traditional drummers, women groups, and youth associations joined officials to tour the new facilities before the official ribbon-cutting. The event highlighted community ownership and excitement over improved access to healthcare.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Akande said the construction of Akuro and Bode PHCs aligns with his administration’s belief that a healthy population is the bedrock of economic and social progress. “Today we are not just commissioning buildings. We are opening doors of hope, healing, and opportunity for our mothers, children, fathers, and elders,” he stated.
He disclosed that the local government collaborated with the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board to ensure both centres meet state standards. Arrangements have been finalized to post qualified health workers and maintain a steady supply of essential drugs and vaccines for continuous service delivery.
Dr. Olatunji, represented by Dr. Oluwole, commended Hon. Akande for prioritizing primary healthcare. He noted that functional PHCs reduce pressure on secondary and tertiary hospitals while improving early detection and prevention of diseases, calling Akuro and Bode PHCs models of state-local government partnership.
Community leaders and residents described the development as long overdue. Mrs. Adebayo, a trader at Akuro market, said women previously traveled long distances for antenatal care and delivery, and the new centre will reduce complications. Hon. Akande assured that the two PHCs are part of a broader plan to upgrade healthcare across all wards in Ibadan South West, bringing the council closer to its goal of quality primary healthcare within a short walk for every resident.
