The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on annual leave, with Deputy Governor Barrister Bayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s absence.
The leave is scheduled to begin on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026, while Governor Makinde is expected to officially resume office on September 14, 2026.
The approval followed the consideration of a formal letter transmitted by the governor to the House in line with constitutional provisions requiring a governor to notify the legislature whenever he intends to be away from office.
The governor’s correspondence was read during plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
Lawmakers unanimously granted the request and expressed confidence that governance would continue seamlessly under the leadership of the deputy governor throughout the period of the governor’s leave.
Following the approval, the Assembly affirmed that Barrister Bayo Lawal would act on behalf of Governor Makinde and oversee the day-to-day administration of the state until the governor resumes duty.
Speaking after the approval, the Deputy Speaker wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing leave and reiterated the legislature’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the executive arm in the interest of the people of Oyo State.
The lawmakers also commended the governor for complying with constitutional requirements by formally notifying the House, describing the action as a demonstration of respect for the rule of law and democratic governance, while the Assembly directed that its resolution be communicated to the executive for necessary action.
