Governor Seyi Makinde has reiterated the heavy burden of insecurity he currently feels as the Chief Security Officer of Oyo State, stressing that state governors still lack the constitutional authority and direct control over security agencies needed to effectively tackle growing security threats across the country.

The Oyo State governor made the remarks while delivering his address shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) during the party’s presidential primary election held today in Ibadan.

Governor Makinde noted that although the occasion was meant to be a moment of celebration and political advancement, he could not hide his sadness and concern over the recent abduction of school children and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. According to him, the unfortunate incident further highlights the urgent need for constitutional reforms that would allow state governments greater control and coordination over security operations within their territories.

The governor maintained that while governors are constantly held accountable by the people whenever security challenges arise, they are often limited by the existing constitutional structure, which places operational control of security agencies under the Federal Government. He stressed that granting states more authority in security matters would improve response time, intelligence gathering and overall protection of lives and property.

Governor Makinde further assured residents that the Oyo State Government, in collaboration with security agencies and relevant stakeholders, is working tirelessly to secure the safe release of the abducted pupils and teachers. He added that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and sustaining peace and stability across the state.

While outlining some of his visions and promises if elected president, Governor Makinde emphasized the need for inclusive governance, stronger institutions, economic reforms and a people-oriented leadership capable of addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.

Earlier in his remarks, the National Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, described the peaceful conduct of the party’s primary election as a strong reflection of internal democracy and political maturity within the party.

Dantalle urged party members and Nigerians at large to work collectively towards rebuilding national unity, restoring public confidence in leadership and returning Nigeria to a path of stability, development and national pride.
