The recent protest by some concerned youths against Hon. Yussuf Adebisi’s representation of Ibadan South-West Constituency may have been politically motivated, but it has once again exposed the growing dissatisfaction over his quality of representation.
It is a known fact that Hon. Yussuf Adebisi was largely fortunate and politically favoured by the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, mainly because of the relationship and loyalty his father shared with the governor. It was never really about his credentials, antecedents or exceptional political capacity. In politics, such opportunities are allowed and common. However, to whom much is given, much is expected — especially when one is not only representing a family name but also representing the hopes of the youth demographic that has long desired greater opportunities in governance.
During the 9th Assembly, many people viewed his time in office as unserious and lacking legislative impact. Several journalists and observers openly claimed they saw him playing games on his phone during important plenary sessions. His excessive youthful exuberance also became a public concern, as he was allegedly seen in questionable places and around questionable individuals, including sex workers, among other controversies.
When concerns were raised, his supporters often defended him by saying he grew up within the entertainment circle and should not be judged too harshly. While it appeared that some behaviours, such as openly playing games during sessions, reduced over time, many argue that the frequent social lifestyle and public gallivanting never stopped, as videos and pictures allegedly continued to circulate online and within political circles.
However, this write-up is not intended as a personal attack on Hon. Adebisi’s private life. Personal lifestyle may not always determine political performance. The major issue remains the quality of representation given to the good people of Ibadan South-West Constituency over the past seven years.
For many constituents, one of the major projects often associated with Hon. Adebisi is the construction of a mini police station, which, according to residents, has still not been effectively utilized by the Nigerian Police Force. There were also allegations that patrol vans reportedly facilitated by Governor Seyi Makinde for House of Assembly members to support security efforts within their constituencies were instead being used as part of his personal convoy.
Some may argue that representation goes beyond constituency projects and should be judged more by legislative contributions and policymaking. However, critics insist that Hon. Adebisi has also failed in that regard. Effective representation requires regular engagement with constituents through town hall meetings and consultations to understand the needs of the people and sponsor people-oriented legislation. Yet, many claim that throughout his years in office, he hardly organized meaningful town hall interactions with community leaders, delegates or constituents.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Youth and Sports, many expected stronger visibility, innovation and advocacy for youth development. Critics argue that outside occasions attended by the governor, his involvement and impact within the committee were hardly noticeable.
Politically, many within his party also describe him as having an “is-coming” attitude — a politician whose promises rarely translate into strong grassroots political structure or action. Several party leaders allegedly tolerated and supported him mainly because of Governor Makinde’s backing rather than genuine confidence in his political strength or performance.
After nearly eight years of representation, many constituents are now asking serious questions. What exactly has Hon. Yussuf Adebisi done to deserve a third term reportedly being served to him on a platter of gold? Why must it be Adebisi again? Are there no other individuals within the constituency with stronger credentials, better capacity, proven antecedents and deeper grassroots connection?
These are the questions many people within Ibadan South-West Constituency continue to ask as it is another political season.
